It could be an extraterrestrial civilization or an alternative, parallel reality. More simply, it could be the survivalist version of our planet after a climate crisis, or a technological mishap of massive proportions. It doesn’t really matter which. What counts is that the universe described by Ryan Heshka is one of fantasy, a mad, wild world inhabited by masked pin-up girls, fearsome femmes fatales, bizarre chimeras and space monsters, superheroes and sub-humans, but above all genetic variations of all kinds, crossed, grafted hybrids of mutant humanity, of fauna and flora adapting to new conditions of life. This – in short – is the daily imaginary of an original Canadian artist, who in his canvases “projects” the carousel of a multicolored range of organic forms, a catalogue of promiscuous and spurious species that embody the Darwinist dream of evolution run amok.

The idea is to represent, as Ryan Heshka says, “the first generation of new life forms after the end of the world.” And in fact his paintings pullulate with freak show creatures, eccentric and rather outlandish entities that seem to have leapt off the pages of a DC comic – something like Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison, for example – but also anomalous morphologies worthy of the Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, or – if you will – Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. Nevertheless, unlike the leaden atmospheres of sci-fi dystopias, Heshka’s painting is packed with bright colors, blaring yellows, blazing reds and intense greens that curiously remind us of the palette of the leader of the Neue Leipziger Schule, Neo Rauch. Moreover, his whimsical characters, though unusual, even seem to be normal within his prophetic vision of a planet rising from the ashes of a human-built civilization, where life can survive only by inventing new and unforeseen genetic combinations.
Putting aside the dark tones of the previous exhibition Midnight Movie[1] (2018), this time Ryan Heshka lets himself be guided by the idea of a rebirth, of form and creativity, that turns around concepts of germination, blossoming and proliferation, not only of unprecedented beings but also of natural landscapes halfway between a post-apocalyptic Eden and an alien Garden of Earthly Delights. “My new works portray the coming of spring after a long winter,” the artist says, “and perhaps this is why the botanical species that set the tone of these landscapes seem so lively and luminous.”

The theme of landscape has already been a recurring presence in the paintings of Romance of Canada[2] (2015), but it that case it was a sidereal nature made of snowy conifer woods and frozen grottos. Here, on the other hand, the artist shapes a new Jurassic geography, alternating uncertain morphologies such as those depicted in the painting Winter Swamp Oasis, a sort of geo-climatic oxymoron, or like the forest of modified cacti of Love Letter to the Past (Prehistoric Vandals), which seems to have been borrowed from the set of a classic episode of Star Trek.
Moreover, the theme of the Eden-like garden, which spontaneously arose during the preparation of the works, perhaps in relation to the impression of cloistered isolation during the pandemic, is accompanied by one of the most typical motifs of Heshka’s imagery, that of the man-animal hybrid, addressed through a singular gathering of figures ranging from the iridescent bug-woman seen in The Art of the Blind Beetle to the gallant couple composed of a muscular mermaid and an amphibious girl, in Frog Wife’s Paradise (also the protagonist of a comic book made by the artist), all the way to the advancing group of unnamable genetic oddities of Cult-ivation.

In short, the savage lands of Heshka host a plentiful assortment of weird creatures that elude any attempt at classification. There are not only crossings between identifiable species – like the women-octopi, for example, of The Blossoming Pond and Post Reign Fall – but also indeterminate, anatomically abnormal entities, like those that appear in Voice of Bloom and Sinister Grove, a lineage of prodigious and fatal monsters that unleash an almost enchanting power with their wings of changing colors, their skins striped with arterial branchings, their plumed raiment and petal-shaped pelts to cover feverish and toxic pudenda.

The monster has a special place in the artist’s imagination, because it represents the frequentation of an overturned universe, the normality of an alternative dimension that can be seen as an allegory of the collective unconscious in the era of the downfall of civilization, and at the same time the foreshadowing of a future dominated by otherness, and the non-conformity with everything that is familiar to us.
Though with its usual irony and lightness, Heshka’s painting, feeding on the pop culture of science-fiction comics and B-movies, addresses a very timely subject, namely the hypothesis of a world without human beings (or, at lease “beings that are fully human”), in the wake of a dramatic biotic transition of mass extinction. Paradoxically, Ryan Heshka takes a non-anthropocentric perspective – curiously close to that of the contemporary philosophers of Speculative Realism[3] or the so-called Dark Ecology of Timothy Morton[4] – to describe a reality dominated by antediluvian creatures and Lovecraftian entities, like those that emerge from the depths of the earth in Love Letter to the Past (Prehistoric Vandals).

But in this dimension of vintage science fiction, seething with trans-human figures that seem to reset the laws of genetic inheritance, what counts is the vision of an unstoppable proliferation of life forms, a joyful and springtime dissemination of organisms, some of which are partially anthropomorphic (and furthermore sheathed in bizarre “camp” garb), that reassure us about the fact that no end of the world will ever be quite definitive. If anything, there will be the end of an obsolete species like homo sapiens, the last of a long series of now-extinct hominids.

Ryan Heshka. Springs to come

Potrebbe essere una civiltà extraterrestre oppure una realtà parallela alternativa o, semplicemente, la versione survivalista del nostro pianeta dopo una crisi climatica o una singolarità tecnologica di proporzioni epiche, poco importa. Quel che conta è che quello descritto da Ryan Heshka è un universo fantastico, un mondo folle e selvaggio popolato da pin-up mascherate e temibili femme fatale, bizzarre chimere e mostri spaziali, supereroi e subumani, ma soprattutto variazioni genetiche di ogni sorta, incroci, innesti e ibridi di un’umanità mutata e di una fauna e flora riadattate a nuove condizioni di vita. Questo è, in distillato, l’odierno immaginario di un originale artista canadese, che nelle sue tele “proietta” il carosello di una variopinta gamma di forme organiche, un catalogo di specie promiscue e spurie che incarnano il sogno darwinista di un’evoluzione fuori controllo.
L’idea è quella di rappresentare, come dice Ryan Heshka, “la prima generazione di nuove forme di vita, dopo un’ipotetica fine del mondo”. E infatti, nelle sue tele pullulano creature da freak show, entità eccentriche e un po’ bislacche che paiono uscite dalle pagine di un fumetto DC – qualcosa come il Doom Patrol di Grant Morrison, per esempio -, ma anche morfologie anomale degne della Trilogia dell’Area X di Jeff VanderMeer o, se preferite, dello Stalker di Andrej Tarkovskij. Però, a differenza delle atmosfere plumbee tipiche delle distopie fantascientifiche, la pittura di Heshka è dominata da una felice gamma di colori brillanti, fatta di gialli squillanti, rossi accesi e verdi intensi che curiosamente richiamano la palette cromatica del capofila della Neue Leipziger Schule, Neo Rauch. Inoltre, i suoi estrosi personaggi, benché insoliti, appaiono addirittura normali nella sua visione profetica di un pianeta risorto dalle ceneri della civiltà antropica, dove la vita sopravvive inventando nuove e imprevedibili combinazioni genetiche.

Accantonati i toni dark della precedente mostra Midnight Movie[1], questa volta Ryan Heshka si lascia guidare dall’idea di una rinascita, insieme formale e creativa, che ruota attorno ai concetti di germinazione, fioritura e proliferazione, non solo di personaggi inediti, ma anche di paesaggi naturali che stanno a metà tra un eden post-apocalittico e un Giardino delle delizie alieno. “I miei nuovi lavori rappresentano l’avvento della primavera dopo un lungo inverno”, dice l’artista, “forse per questo, le specie vegetali che caratterizzano questi paesaggi appaiono così vivaci e luminose”.
Il tema del paesaggio era già stato uno degli elementi ricorsivi dei dipinti di Romance of Canada[2] (2015), ma in quel caso, si trattava di una natura siderale, fatta di boschi innevati di conifere e grotte ghiacciate. Qui, invece, l’artista plasma una nuova geografia giurassica, in cui si alternano morfologie incerte come quella raffigurata nel dipinto Winter Swamp Oasis, una specie di ossimoro geoclimatico, o come la foresta di cactacee modificate di Love Letter to the Past (Prehistoric Vandals), che sembra rubata alla scenografia di un episodio classico di Star Trek.

Inoltre, il tema del giardino edenico, emerso spontaneamente durante la preparazione dei lavori, forse in reazione al clima di isolamento claustrale vissuto durante la pandemia, si accompagna a uno dei motivi più tipici dell’iconografia di Heshka, quello dell’ibridazione tra uomo e animale, trattato attraverso una singolare raccolta di figure che vanno dall’iridata donna-bacherozzo ritratta in The Art of the Blind Beetle, alla galante coppia composta dal muscoloso sirenetto e dalla ragazza anfibia di Frog’s Wife Paradise (peraltro protagonista anche di un comic book disegnato dall’artista), fino all’avanzante gruppo di innominabili anomalie genetiche di Cult-ivation.
Insomma, le lande selvagge di Heshka ospitano un nutrito campionario di creature weird che sfuggono a qualsiasi tentativo di classificazione. Non ci sono, infatti, solo incroci tra specie identificabili – come, ad esempio, le donne-polpo di The Blossoming Pond e Post-Reign Fall – ma anche entità indeterminate, anatomicamente eteroclite, come quelle che compaiono in Voice of Bloom e Sinister Grove, una teoria di mostri prodigiosi e fatali, che sprigionano un potere quasi incantatorio con quelle loro ali dai colori cangianti e le epidermidi striate di ramificazioni arteriose, quei loro abiti pennuti e le pellicce petaliformi a coprire le febbrili e venefiche pudende.

Il mostro occupa un posto privilegiato nella fantasia dell’artista, perché rappresenta la consuetudine di un universo capovolto, la normalità di una dimensione alternativa che può essere considerata come un’allegoria dell’inconscio collettivo nell’epoca del tramonto della civiltà e, insieme, l’anticipazione di un futuro dominato dall’alterità e dalla difformità con tutto ciò che ci è familiare. Pur con l’ironia e la levità che la caratterizzano, la pittura di Heshka, alimentata dalla cultura pop dei fumetti di fantascienza e dei B-Movie, contempla un soggetto quanto mai attuale, ossia l’ipotesi di un mondo privo di esseri umani (o, perlomeno, di “esseri del tutto umani”), quello che seguirebbe alla drammatica transizione biotica di un’estinzione di massa. Paradossalmente, Ryan Heshka adotta una prospettiva non antropocentrica – curiosamente vicina a quella dei filosofi contemporanei del Realismo Speculativo[3] o alla cosiddetta Ecologia oscura di Timothy Morton[4] – per descrivere una realtà dominata da creature antidiluviane e entità lovecraftiane, come quelle che fuoriescono dalle profondità terrestri in Love Letter to the Past (Prehistoric Vandals). Ma in questa dimensione da fantascienza vintage, brulicante di figure transumane che sembrano ridefinire le leggi dell’ereditarietà genetica, quel che conta è la visione di un’inarrestabile proliferazione di forme di vita, una gioiosa e primaverile disseminazione di organismi, alcuni dei quali parzialmente antropomorfi (e per di più inguainati in bizzarri abiti camp), che ci rassicurano sul fatto che nessuna fine del mondo sarà mai definitiva. Semmai solo quella di una specie obsoleta come l’homo sapiens, l’ultimo di una lunga serie di ominidi ormai estinti.
