Rachel Hobkirk. The Uncanny Edgy Cuteness

All’immaginario pittorico pop surrealista americano degli anni Novanta appartiene una sottocorrente definita “Big Eye Art” che predilige la rappresentazione di personaggi ipertrofici, caratterizzati da corpi infantili e volti dagli occhi grandi che somigliano a quelli delle bambole. Si tratta di un tema iconografico, o forse dovremmo dire di uno stile, in parte ispirato ai dipinti di Margaret Keane, artista americana diventata famosa negli anni Sessanta con il nome del marito, Walter Keane, e di cui il regista Tim Burton ha raccontato la storia nel film Big Eyes (2014).

Un riferimento imprescindibile di questo genere pittorico sono le Blythe, bambole dai grandi occhi, create nel 1972 dalla designer Allison Katzman per la ditta Marvin Glass and Associates, ma quasi subito ritirate dal mercato per il loro aspetto inquietante. Le Blythe, le cui forme sono chiaramente ispirate ai dipinti di Margaret Keane, sono state rilanciate nel 1991 dalla Takara, azienda giapponese che le ha trasformate in un prodotto di culto. Attraverso l’esasperata espressività di queste Big Eyed Dolls, molte pittrici pop surrealiste come Marion Peck, Amy Sol, Kukula, Lisa Petrucci e Ana Bagayan hanno trattato i temi dell’infanzia e dell’adolescenza ambientandoli in una dimensione fantastica in bilico tra fiaba e racconto horror.

Sempre negli anni Novanta, dall’altra parte del globo, il movimento Superflat fondato da Takashi Murakami promuove un linguaggio in cui convergono l’immaginario dei manga e dei cartoni animati giapponesi, l’iconografia della pop art occidentale e la subcultura deviata degli otaku. A questa corrente aderiscono artisti che utilizzano uno stile super deformed che si propone di potenziare l’espressività dei personaggi attraverso fattezze anatomiche tipicamente infantili. Oltre a Takashi Murakami, anche Yoshitomo Nara, Aya Takano e Chiho Aoshima saccheggiano la cosiddetta estetica kawaii (l’equivalente giapponese della Cuteness), incarnata da pupazzi e giocattoli che ispirano tenerezza come Hello Kitty o Miffy, popolarissimi non solo in Giappone, ma in tutto il mondo.

Eppure, i paradigmi della Big Eye Art e dell’estetica Kawaii, ormai diventati luoghi comuni della cultura pop contemporanea, riguardano solo superficialmente la pittura di Rachel Hobkirk, che eredita, semmai, un profondo senso di inquietudine da tanta pittura europea del Novecento – dalla Metafisica alla Nuova oggettività, dal Surrealismo al Realismo magico. Rispetto alla nuova categoria estetica della Cuteness, sviluppatasi a partire dall’epoca vittoriana come conseguenza dell’idealizzazione del mondo infantile, la pittura di Rachel Hobkirk è, piuttosto, il risultato di un processo di dissezione analitica del mondo infantile.

Le sue bambole e i suoi giocattoli, dipinti con uno stile insieme nitido e allucinato, sono innanzitutto oggetti transizionali che, come sosteneva il pediatra e psicologo britannico Donald Winnicot, svolgono la funzione di aiutare il bambino a distaccarsi dalla figura materna e a svilupparsi passando dall’iniziale stadio di onnipotenza soggettiva alla successiva comprensione della realtà oggettiva. Sono oggetti che, come i giocattoli e le bambole dipinti da Hobkirk (i Furby, le Barbie, i Playmobil o le Tiny Tears), accompagnano il traumatico processo evolutivo dei bambini. D’altra parte, perfino uno psicanalista come Sheldon Kopp ammetteva senza remore che “l’infanzia è un incubo”^[1].

Forse per questo Rachel Hobkirk ci mostra la matrice drammatica di questi giocattoli, di cui sottolinea la dirompente carica perturbante attraverso una serie di espedienti visivi di taglio cinematografico. Il primo dei quali è il Detail, usato tanto nel dipinto Crying (2023), per accentuare l’espressività sbigottita e dolente degli occhi di una bambola, quanto in Mouthing Words of Regret (2023), per mostrare, in un’altra bambola, la mimica labiale di un sentimento di rimpianto. Un altro artificio usato dall’artista è il cosiddetto split screen, molto in voga negli anni Settanta e impiegato sia in Mask (2023) che in My Fragile Sweetheart (2023), per accostare dettagli di giocattoli diversi e creare, così, una sorta di cortocircuito interpretativo non meno destabilizzante dei dettagli anatomici delle bambole. A questa categoria si può, in qualche modo, ricondurre anche un’opera come Tongue (2023), una specie di mise-en-scène del titillamento tra oggetti inanimati che è quanto di più vicino alle simulazioni erotiche nei giochi infantili. Infine, Hobkirk si serve anche della tecnica del close up, in particolare nell’opera Origin of the Female Painter (2023) dove il volto scarabocchiato a pennarello di una bambola diventa, retrospettivamente, visione profetica del destino dell’artista.

Rachel Hobkirk non celebra l’infanzia o i giochi infantili, non strizza l’occhio alla cultura pop per il solo gusto di condividere il sentimento nostalgico dell’infanzia perduta. Possiamo dire che il vero soggetto della sua pittura sia lo sguardo adulto e analitico che, nella rappresentazione di questi oggetti transizionali, individua l’origine della propria inquietudine esistenziale.

Il riferimento alla pittura del Novecento, soprattutto a quella tra le due guerre, non è casuale. L’inquietudine che sprigiona dalle bambole di Rachel Hobkirk è, infatti, simile a quella che emana dai giocattoli metafisici di Giorgio De Chirico e Alberto Savinio, dai molti object trouvé surrealisti in forma di enigmatici simulacri femminili – come, ad esempio, il Retrospective Bust of a Woman di Salvador Dalì o i conturbanti manichini dell’Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme del 1938, abbigliati, tra gli altri, da Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Joan Mirò e Max Ernst – e perfino da tutta la ritrattistica del Realismo Magico che, passando da Felice Casorati ad Antonio Donghi, da Christian Schad a Otto Dix, da Ubaldo Oppi a Max Beckmann, fino Cagnaccio di San Pietro, sembra composta di una sequenza ininterrotta di volti imbambolati e stupefatti, tanto algidi e immoti da apparire artificiali.

La grammatica pittorica di Hobkirk, così nitida e cristallina, quasi chirurgica, richiama le atmosfere fredde e oggettive della pittura degli anni Venti e Trenta, ma adatta quel tipo di rigore formale alla sensibilità dell’odierna civiltà digitale. Infatti, nei suoi dipinti ad olio su tela di lino si avverte la presenza invisibile di quel particolare filtro ottico che chiamiamo “schermo”. Se i suoi dipinti mostrano inquadrature tipiche del cinema è perché la sua pittura, più che “una finestra sul mondo”, è un telo proiettivo su cui l’artista fa scorrere feticci e simulacri che incarnano non solo le sue personali ossessioni e manie, ma anche quelle di una intera generazione intenta a formulare nuovi postulati estetici. Concetti poco rassicuranti, come una specie di nuova Edgy Cuteness^[2], capace di traghettare il senso di turbamento dell’Unheimlich^[3] freudiano nella forma di un oggetto inanimato che simula quelle caratteristiche di vulnerabilità, tenerezza e innocenza proprie dei bambini e di alcuni cuccioli di animali.

To the American pop surrealist pictorial imagery of the 1990s belongs a subcurrent defined as ‘Big Eye Art’ that prefers the depiction of hypertrophic characters, characterised by childlike bodies and large-eyed faces resembling those of dolls. It is an iconographic theme, or perhaps we should say a style, partly inspired by the paintings of Margaret Keane, an American artist who became famous in the 1960s under the name of her husband, Walter Keane, and whose story was told by director Tim Burton in the film Big Eyes (2014). An inescapable reference of this pictorial genre are the Blythe dolls with big eyes, created in 1972 by designer Allison Katzman for the firm Marvin Glass and Associates, but almost immediately withdrawn from the market due to their disturbing appearance. The Blythe dolls, whose shapes were clearly inspired by Margaret Keane’s paintings, were relaunched in 1991 by Takara, a Japanese company that turned them into a cult product. Through the exasperated expressiveness of these Big Eyed Dolls, many pop surrealist painters such as Marion Peck, Amy Sol, Kukula, Lisa Petrucci and Ana Bagayan have dealt with the themes of childhood and adolescence by setting them ina fantastical dimension hovering between fairy tale and horror story.Also duringthe 1990s, on the other side of the globe, the Superflatmovement founded by Takashi Murakami promoted a language in which the imagery of Japanese manga and cartoons, the iconography of Western pop art and the deviant subculture of otaku converged. This current includes artists who use a super deformedstyle that aims to enhance the expressiveness of characters through typically childlike anatomical features. In addition to Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Aya Takano and Chiho Aoshima also plunder the so-called kawaii aesthetic(the Japanese equivalent of Cuteness), embodied by tenderness-inspiring puppets and toys such as Hello Kitty or Miffy, popular not only in Japan, but worldwide. And yet, the paradigms of Big Eye Art and Kawaii aesthetics, which have become commonplaces of contemporary pop culture, only superficially concern Rachel Hobkirk’s painting, which inherits, if anything, a profound sense of disquiet from so much 20th-century European painting – from Metaphysics to New Objectivity, from Surrealism to Magic Realism. Compared to the new aesthetic category of Cuteness, which developed from the Victorian era onwards as a consequence of the idealisation of the world of childhood, Rachel Hobkirk’s painting is, rather, the result of a process of analytical dissection of the infantile world.Her dolls and toys, painted in a style that is at once sharp and hallucinating, are above all transitional objects that, as the British paediatrician and psychologist Donald Winnicot argued, serve the function of helping the child to detach itself from the mother figure and develop from the initial stage ofsubjective omnipotence to the subsequent understanding of objective reality. They are objects that, like the toys and dolls painted by Hobkirk (the Furby, Barbie, Playmobilor Tiny Tears), accompany the traumatic developmental process of children. On the other hand, even a psychoanalyst like Sheldon Kopp admitted without hesitation that ‘childhood is a nightmare’¹.

Perhaps this is why Rachel Hobkirk shows us the dramatic matrix of these toys, whose disruptive charge she emphasises through a series of cinematic visual devices. The first of which is the Detail, used both in the painting Crying (2023), to accentuate the stunned and pained expressiveness of a doll’s eyes, and in Mouthing Words of Regret (2023), to show, in another doll, the lip mimicry of a feeling of regret. Another artifice used by the artist is the so-called split screen, very much in vogue in the 1970s and employed both in Mask (2023) and in My Fragile Sweetheart (2023), to juxtapose details of different toys and thus create a sort of interpretative short-circuit no less destabilising than the anatomical details of the doll.A work such as Tongue (2023), a kind of mise-en-scène of titillation between inanimate objects that is as close as one can get to erotic simulations in childhood games, can also be traced back to this category. Finally, Hobkirk also makes use of the close-up technique, in particular in the work Origin of the Female Painter(2023) where the face scribbled in felt-tip pen of a doll becomes, in retrospect, a prophetic vision of the artist’s destiny. Rachel Hobkirk does not celebrate childhood or childish games, she does not wink at pop culture just for the sake of sharing the nostalgic feeling of lost childhood. We can say that the real subject of her painting is the adult and analytical gaze that, in the representation of these transitional objects, identifies the origin of its own existential restlessness. The reference to 20th-century painting, especially that between the two wars, is not accidental.The uneasiness emanating from Rachel Hobkirk’s dolls is, in fact, similar to that emanating from the metaphysical toys of Giorgio De Chirico and Alberto Savinio, from the many Surrealist object trouvés in the form of enigmatic female simulacra -such as, for example, Salvador Dali’s Retrospective Bust of a Woman or the perturbing mannequins of the 1938 Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme, dressed, among others, by Marcel Duchamp, Yves Tanguy, Joan Mirò and Max Ernst -and even by all the portraiture of Magic Realism, which, passing from Felice Casorati to Antonio Donghi, from Christian Schad to Otto Dix, from Ubaldo Oppi to Max Beckmann, up to Cagnaccio di San Pietro, seems to consist of an uninterrupted sequence of stunned and stupefied faces, so algid and motionless as to appear artificial. Hobkirk’s pictorial grammar, so crisp and crystalline, almost surgical, recalls the cold and objective atmospheres of the painting of the 1920s and 1930s, but adapts that kind of formal rigour to the sensibility of today’s digital civilisation. Indeed, in her oil paintings on canvas, one can feel the invisible presence of that particular optical filter we call ‘screen’.If her paintings show typical cinema shots, it is because her painting, more than “a window on the world”, is a projective canvas on which the artist runs fetishes and simulacra that embody not only her personal obsessions and manias, but also those of an entire generation intent on formulating new aesthetic postulates. Not very reassuring concepts, like a kind of new Edgy Cuteness², capable of conveying the sense of disturbance of the Freudian Unheimlich in the form of an inanimate object that simulates those characteristics of vulnerability, tenderness and innocence typical of children and certain puppies.
